High spec, low price. The new compact Sport Editions.

The A-Class, CLA Coupé and GLA SUV have new entry-level models. Style and substance at a new lower price starts here.

Words by Ken Pearson. Images from Mercedes-Benz UK and are all in the order of A-Class, CLA Coupé, GLA SUV.

The A-Class hatchback, CLA Coupé and GLA SUV are at the top of their game right now. With striking looks, the latest technology and a wealth of convenience features in every model, the compact car range has never been so attractive. Now with the introduction of three new limited edition variants, the model range is priced more competitively than ever.

The trio of Sport Edition models that kick off the A-Class, CLA Coupé and GLA SUV model ranges are entry level in name but not in nature. All three models come with LED High Performance Headlights, twin 10.25” displays running the second generation MBUX infotainment, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, six USB-C ports, THERMATIC automatic climate control, heated front seats with four-way lumbar support, a reversing camera, front and rear parking sensors, cruise control, Speed Limit Assist and a rear armrest with two cupholders to name just a few equipment items. All models get duo-material upholstery with seats made of ARTICO man-made leather and Bertrix fabric in black.

There are some slight difference between the three models; the A-Class Sport Edition is the only model that features rear privacy glass and the Night Package with black trim on the window surrounds, mirror caps and rear bumper insert. The 18” aerodynamically optimised alloy wheels complete the look of our favourite hatchback. The CLA Coupé wears 17” wheels finished in black and silver and brings crystal grey headlining to the cabin. The GLA Sport Edition adds 18” 5-twin-spoke alloy wheels painted in dark tremolite grey and benefits from the EASY-PACK electrically powered tailgate to boost practicality and the ease of loading.

All three Sport Edition models are powered by the 1.3 litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine in 180-tune. This mild hybrid assisted engine is paired with a 7-speed automatic transmission that provides smooth shifting and power applications at town or motorway speeds. The mild hybrid system adds a small electric motor between the engine and transmission which can boost performance and fuel economy. The headline power and torque figures of 136 horsepower and 200 Newton metres torque remain, but the electric motor can add an extra 14 hp and 200 nm which makes gentle acceleration effortless and overtaking performance noticeably stronger in my own experience with the new engine. As well as allowing for extended stop-start times at traffic lights, the mild hybrid system allows for engine-off coasting when driving in Eco mode.

The A-Class offers luxurious refinement in an everyday usable package while the CLA Coupé has one of the most striking silhouettes in the compact car segment. The slightly wider body and heavier steering makes for a keener driver’s car that rewards you for enjoying how it can handle the corners. The GLA elevates the practicality with its greater ground clearance, taller cabin and larger boot with up to 485 litres of space available with the seats up.

Pricing is as follows:
A-Class Sport Edition from £30,720
CLA Coupé Sport Edition from £32,550
GLA Sport Edition from £35,660

The A-Class sees a saving of £1,200 compared to the Sport Executive model, while the CLA and GLA have had their starting prices reduced by £2,000. The only options for all three models are metallic paint which costs £625.
